Title CR-2302 – Knoxville Firewall Kernel Upgrade v2

This kernel upgrade provides enhancements for URL filtering, performance improvements, and additional features for the NetTN firewalls in Knoxville.  CR-2302 will be implemented on Saturday, July 10, 2010    12:01 AM Central
to Monday, July 26, 2010, 11:59 PM Central.

Planned windows during this period are as follows:

Part 1 - Freeze all non-essential changes to the NetTN firewalls Saturday, July 10, 2010   12:01 AM Central to Monday, July 26, 2010   11:59 PM Central

Part 2 - Move all traffic to the Nashville egress Saturday, July 17, 2010    1:00 AM Central - 5:00 AM Central

Part 3 - Perform the kernel upgrade on both firewall chassis in Knoxville
Saturday, July 17, 2010    9:00 AM Central - 9:00 PM Central

Part 4 - Move traffic to the Knoxville egress - Phase 1 Sunday, July 18, 2010     2:00 AM Central - 6:00 AM Central

Part 5 - Move traffic to the Knoxville egress - Phase 2 Wednesday, July 21, 2010   1:00 AM Central - 5:00 AM Central

END SITE IMPACT:  Expected end site impact for each part of this change is as follows:

Part 1 - Freeze all non-essential changes to the NetTN firewalls
Saturday, July 10, 2010   12:01 AM Central to Monday, July 26, 2010   11:59 PM Central.  During this period, SmartPortal policy changes will be unavailable.  NetTN end sites should open tickets for any required security changes.

Part 2 - Move all traffic to the Nashville egress Saturday, July 17, 2010    1:00 AM Central - 5:00 AM Central Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) and eHealth (EHE) end sites will experience a brief impact that will not exceed 15 minutes as traffic is moved to the Nashville Internet egress.  There may be potentially degraded IDS monitoring capacity for TBR & eHealth while using the Nashville egress.

Part 3 - Perform the kernel upgrade on both firewall chassis in Knoxville
Saturday, July 17, 2010    9:00 AM Central - 9:00 PM Central.  As all NetTN traffic will be using the Nashville egress, no end site impact is anticipated during this activity.

Part 4 - Move traffic to the Knoxville egress - Phase 1 Sunday, July 18, 2010     2:00 AM Central - 6:00 AM Central.  Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), eHealth (EHE), State Department of Education K-12 Schools (K-12), and Libraries and Local Governments (LLG) end sites will experience a brief impact that will not exceed 15 minutes as traffic is moved to the Nashville Internet egress.  There may be potentially degraded IDS monitoring capacity for K-12 and LLG traffic while using the Knoxville egress.

Part 5 - Move traffic to the Knoxville egress - Phase 2 Wednesday, July 21, 2010   1:00 AM Central - 5:00 AM Central.  Private Colleges and Universities (PCU), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), State of Tennessee Office for Information Resources (OIR), Community Health (CHN), University of Tennessee (UT), and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) end sites will experience a brief impact that will not exceed 15 minutes as traffic is moved to the Knoxville Internet egress.  There may be potentially degraded IDS monitoring capacity, and OIR shunning capacity, while using the Knoxville egress.
